Here in Louisiana we say, "Let the good times roll!" Holidays are celebrated with crafts, costumes and decorations, to everyone's enjoyment.

Matching Halloween or Mardi Gras Costumes for All

Halloween (and Mardi Gras) can be a lot of fun for all, even the family dog. This year, why not dress the whole family, including the dog, in matching costumes, then have a Halloween party or join in on a Halloween (or Mardi Gras) parade with other dog lovers and their pets?

We've searched the web for some of the most clever and attractive costumes for women, men, children and pets. We've also included videos of pet parades as well as books that will give you costume ideas and will show you how to make a costume for you and your dog or cat.

Does Your Dog or Cat Dress Up?

This activity may not work for all dogs (or many cats), but you should know if your dog (or cat) enjoys putting on a costume and being around people and other dogs. Our mixed breed dog, Rio, is very laid back and will readily dress in costumes, but the grumpy little pedigreed Cocker Spaniel won't take part in such an activity. One of our cats will allow costumes, but she has to be in the mood.

Princess and Prince

Hef and Holly by JenJen1761

Though this pair is not actually a prince and princess of the royal blood, Hef does live in a castle of sorts and Holly lives like a princess.

We'll start our Halloween parade with the Prince and Princesses. There are many princess costumes available, but these are our favorites.

Be a fairy tale princess... you may even find your prince or a frog. Either way you'll be the queen of Halloween or Mardi Gras.

Frog Prince

Once upon a time, the lovely princess that you see way up above kissed the frog below and turned him into the handsome prince and they married. On Halloween night, the little infant prince starts looking a little green. But when his mother, the princess, kisses him, they all lived happily ever after. The End

Make masking a family affair - dress as princess and frog prince. There's even a costume for the family pet.

Angels and Demons

Angels

These angel costumes are certainly heavenly. If Dad wants to get in on the act, he can find halos, wings and white robes sold separately. Or he could go in the opposite direction and get something red and pointy.

Little Angel

Your little one will look like a dream in this darling angel costume.

Lil' Angel Dog Costume

And your little doggie can be an angel, too.

Devils

The demons follow behind the angels of course and even your pups can dress as cute little devils. You can make it a group affair as angels and demons.

Costumes Are Worn at Mardi Gras, too.

Mardi Gras Krewe of Barkus

If you live in Louisiana, like we do, you can recycle your Halloween costumes for the Mardi Gras celebration in the spring. The pet lovers in New Orleans and on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain have even organized Mardi Gras parades especially for dogs. One of them is called "Barkus". The Krewe of Barkus chooses a king and queen each year and they ride in little floats. The Barkus Parade is always a lot of fun for both the 2-legged and 4-legged of New Orleans. Maybe you'll want to come down and join the fun. It's all for a good cause and the dogs seem to love it as much as their human friends. They love the fact that the parade has gone to the dogs.

Be a Cave Man, Woman or Dog

Another great group costume - A He-man, Jane and their cave dog. When I was a child, one of my favorite television heroes was Tarzan. I always wanted to be Jane so I could fly through the trees with the handsome ape man. With these outfits anyone can.

Versatile Animal Print Toga

Animal print togas are available and make a very versatile costume for men or women. Add a bone necklace and a club and the look is complete.

Pirate Dog

Augh, ye maties, join me in a night of plundering for sweet treats. I'll even let the kiddies come along if they dare.

Many communities have Mardi Gras and Halloween parades for the pups. What is cuter than a peg-leg pirate pug?

Make Your Own

Perhaps you'd like to be creative and use these ideas to make your own costumes. The Bow-Wow-Wow Costume book has many good ideas for doggy costumes. Be creative and you may want to bring your dog to one of the many community pet parades.

Wizard of Oz

A wizard of Oz theme is full of possibilities. There are Dorothy costumes for little girls and dogs, too. Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Bashful Lion come in many styles and sizes. You can clothe all of the characters in the story.
